'I'm sure he can be the league's top goalscorer'

Mamelodi Sundowns hat-trick hero Lucas Ribeiro Costa has been backed to finish the 2023/24 season as DStv Premiership top scorer.

On Tuesday at Loftus Versfeld stadium, Ribeiro's hat-trick inspired the defending champions to a 3-0 victory over AmaZulu FC.

Former Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego says the poor defending by Premier Soccer League clubs will aid the South American to walk away with the Golden Boot.

The three goals saw Ribeiro taking his league tally to 10 goals, overtaking Cape Town City's Khanyisa Mayo who currently sits at 8 goals.

"Ribeiro he's got quality, and he plays in a team that creates opportunities, he's got a good left foot and he finishes, and he's in a right team," Mashego said to KickOff.

"So far, he has proven to be a good goalscorer he's scoring goals and now he is in the lead following the three goals he scored yesterday.

"And I'm sure after last night he will be a bit more confident. If more chances avail themselves, he will put them away," Mashego added.

"I'm sure he can be the league's top goalscorer because he scores a lot. In general, PSL clubs, when they play against Sundowns tend to do things that are out of character.

"Look at his third goal against AmaZulu, no team in the professional ranks should defend like that.

"You can't concede a goal like that or leave a man free like that. It always happens when these clubs come up against Sundowns.

"I'm sure even in the ABC Motsepe League, they don't defend or mark like that. You don't do that with Sundowns. I'm telling you, they will beat you, they have good passers of the ball."
