Sundowns on the brink of league glory

Betway Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns registered a 3-0 win over Stellenbosch FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium.

Masandawna started with two changes from the midweek win over Chippa United, with Lucas Ribeiro coming in for Marcelo Allende while Grant Kekana replaced Mosa Lebusa in defence.

Ribeiro justified his return six minutes in when he powered into the top-corner following an indirect free-kick and registered his 14th league goal of the season.

The Tshwane giants doubled the lead six minutes later when Iqraam Rayners sneaked behind the defence to blast in Ribeiro’s reverse pass.

Masandawana continued to put the visitors to shreds, as Arthur Sales got in on the act on 17 minutes when he picked up a loose ball on the right of the area and fired in at the near post.

The Maroons got a rare chance two minutes past the half-hour mark when a delivery by Fawaaz Basadien found Devon Titus, who steered wide from the left of the area.

Stellenbosch coach Steve Barker made a double substitution after the break as Chumani Butsaka came in for Thato Khiba while Lesiba Nku replaced Titus.

The opening stages of the second half didn’t take off as the first, but the Maroons had a chance through a free-kick by Basadien, who saw his effort saved by Onyango.

Onyango remained busy between the sticks midway in the second half and made another strong save to deny Ismael Toure with a header following a corner-kick, as Barker's charges upped the tempo looking for a consolation.

However, the Brazilians were able to see out the clash in comfortable fashion and opened-up a 15-point gap over second-place Orlando Pirates, meaning they need one more point to clinch the title.

Confirmed line-ups:

Mamelodi Sundowns: Onyango, Mokoena, Khoza, Kekana, Modiba, Adams, Ribeiro, Mudau, Matthews, Rayners, Sales
