Chipezeze hits back on local vs foreign debate

Magesi FC goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze has weighed in on the discussion around foreign goalkeepers being preferred over the local goalkeepers by Premier Soccer League clubs.

While clubs and fans argues that having foreign goalkeepers in the PSL improves the league, goalkeeping coaches are concern it hinders the progress and development of South African goalkeepers, with some even suggesting a rule preventing Betway Premiership clubs from using foreign goalkeepers.

Apparently, coaches in the PSL have shown more trust in foreign goalkeepers than in the local ones.

"To say the foreign goalkeepers are hindering the progress of the South African goalkeepers, that's not true," Chipezeze tells KickOff.

"Just by looking at the top PSL clubs you know, at Orlando Pirates you find Sipho Chaine. He is not foreign he is local and he is playing well week in week out.

"Ronwen Williams at Mamelodi Sundowns, he is playing and he is playing well, he is not foreign and not local, he's even an international, he played in the FIFA Club World Cup

"I don't even entertain such talks because I know at every football club there's quality goalkeepers, whether he is local or foreign it doesn't matter.

"Having foreign goalkeepers it also brings quality and improves the league, hence I don't normally look into such things."

Chipezeze was voted the 2024/2025 Carling Knockout Player of the Tournament.
