For one reason or another, some kits tend to evaporate from the memories of sports fans. Here's a look at some special South African football kits you may have forgotten.
The Story
Kits are a significant part of the game, as they not only represent the identity of a club but can also serve as a reminder of a specific time in the club’s history.
For example, no one can forget Bafana Bafana’s 1996 home jersey, as it is synonymous with their historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph.

In today’s age, it has also become normal for teams to have three kits per season: the home, away, and third kits.
However, having a third kit isn’t necessarily common in South African football, with many clubs opting to have just two jerseys per campaign.
In instances where we’ve seen the release of an alternative jersey, it is often due to a special occasion, such as an anniversary or a collaboration with another brand or club partner.
Over the years, we’ve seen Mamelodi Sundowns unveil some special edition kits, including a collaboration paying tribute to the Vodacom Bulls in 2018.
In 2023, Masandawana, along with PUMA, also released the African Dawn kit.
In the 2019/20 season, Kaizer Chiefs released a special black and gold top to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
