Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture met with SAFA this week, bringing to light some worrying findings about South Africa's football governing body. Here's a look!
The story
Some tough conversations were had this week when SAFA appeared before the Portfolio Committee on Sport, Arts and Culture.
One of the key takeaways highlighted after the fact-finding meeting was that SAFA has governance issues, with the organisation being questioned about several of its operational decisions.
Another major finding was that SAFA is struggling financially, to a detrimental extent.
It was revealed that the organisation is entangled in various financial problems, including mismanagement, a lack of sponsorship, an inadequate budget, and salary disparities.
The Chairperson of the committee, Mr Joe McGluwa, said a serious follow-up meeting would be necessary.
In a statement on Parliament's official website, McGluwa said: “We need a way forward to pull SAFA from the financial stress it is in.
"It concerns the committee that a lot of crucial details to many issues at SAFA are being withheld from Members.
"Importantly, we could not find a sense that issues were being dealt with proactively.”
McGluwa added: "SAFA is not sustainable; SAFA cannot run its operations. This is the elephant in the room that all football-loving people need to sort the mess out."
