Where Chiefs stand with Maart revealed?

After Kaizer Chiefs confirmed the departure of a fourth player this off-season, this website has the latest on Yusuf Maart's situation, with his contract expiring at the end of June.

On Wednesday, Chiefs officially waved their goodbyes to Edmilson Dove after announcing his contract will not be renewed when it comes to an end on June 30.

He became the fourth player to leave  this winter after the club previously announced the departures of Ranga Chivaviro, Sabelo Radebe, and Njabulo Blom (loan deal not extended).

Maart, who scored the winning goal as Amakhosi beat rivals Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final in May to lift a trophy for the first time since 2015, also has a contract that expires in a little less than two weeks.

The club has a two-year option on the current captain's deal but have not indicated whether they would renew it or not, at least officially.

This publication understands the Soweto giants had until end of May to exercise the option and seemingly not doing so has raised alarm bells over the player's future.

"End of May is standard procedure to exercise the option. If a club does not exercise the option, the player is free to sign with someone else," said an experienced agent.

"Because it's Chiefs, the player might wait to see if they will still approach him (for renewal). He'll probably hold off other offers.

"No one wants to leave Chiefs, you know. If the player doesn't want to leave the team, he'll hold out until they tell him something," added the agent.

According to the laws governing options on contract, the Glamour Boys could lose out on Maart if the former Sekhukhune United man signed elsewhere and they come to negotiate a new deal from June onwards.

"If Maart has not signed with anyone else, Chiefs can still come if they want to keep him with an offer. But if he signed elsewhere and Chiefs come after end of May, it would be too late. It can happen."

KickOff.com contacted the 29-year-old's representatives for clarity, but they had not responded by the time of publishing.
