Sputla pays tribute to fellow Chiefs legend

Tributes have poured in for the late Kaizer Chiefs legend Frank "Jingles" Perreira.

"Baba Ka Sibongile" as Perreira was known in football circles, was part of the great Amakhosi team that won almost everything on offer.

Parreira died at the age of 77 due unknown illness.

His former teammate Zebulon "Sputla" Nhlapo says Parreira played an important role in building the club's rich history.

"He arrived at Chiefs playing as a striker but they converted him into a number 5, he was from Cape Town City," Nhlapo tells KickOff.

"He was given the nickname "Mama ka Sibongile" after the eighties hit song by the Soul Brothers.

"And the name suited him perfectly because he loved conversing in IsiZulu and Sesotho.

"Ryder Mofokeng loved calling him 'mfan' omlungu' meaning 'white boy', but at Cape Town City that's where he made his name.

"Jingles Parreira, what a talent. He was a jolly person, you'd never stop laughing when you were around him.

"He didn't carry himself like a white person would, he fitted well everywhere.

"I didn't receive the news about his passing very well though, Jessica (Motaung) always kept us up to date in our Chiefs legend group about his health.

"Jessica she takes care of us as the elders of the club I must say.

"The last time I saw Jingles was during the club's 50th Anniversary. And back then he looked very healthy for his age.

"He played an important role at Chiefs I must say, we won all the trophies in 1981 because of players like him.

"He encouraged us. He wanted to see everybody happy. In him, we've truly lost a legend.

"I hope his family remain strong in such difficult times."
