How soon can Baartman play for Chiefs?

After Kaizer Chiefs officially announced the signing of Luke Baartman, the question of how soon he can be cleared to make his debut for the most-supported side in South Africa has been dissected.

After announcing Asanele Velebayi just over a week ago, Chiefs also unveiled Baartman on Thursday, though the 19-year-old was already in Amakhosi colours and among the squad when they beat Richards Bay FC 1-0 on Tuesday.

The ex-Cape Town Spurs duo were in a legal battle to be released from their contracts as free agents, after the club got relegated to the ABC Motsepe League, a league deemed 'amateur', according to NSL rules.

After the PSL's Dispute Resolution Chamber declared both players free agents, the Soweto giants were quick to parade them to the public.

The Urban Warriors, after Velebayi was declared a free agent, quickly appealed the DRC's decision to SAFA, meaning the 22-year-old will have to wait for the outcome of the appeal before officially kicking a ball for his new team.

Reliable information that has filtered through to this website's desk is that Spurs have also appealed Baartman's free agency ruling to SAFA, which also implies that the teenager will have to wait for that process to unfold and conclude before making his debut.

Crucially, however, it is understood that Chiefs appear to be in a strong position with regards to Baartman, as he allegedly had a clause on his contract with the Ikamva-based side that he would be a free agent if they did not gain promotion last season.
This is a separate legal matter that could speed up the process of being cleared to play, should they wish to pursue it.

Ernst Middendorp's men finished second-from-bottom in the Motsepe Foundation Championship in 2024/25, condemning them to life in the amaterur ranks.
