'I don't think Mayo is the finisher we're looking for'

Whether Kaizer Chiefs should take the risk of breaking the bank for Khanyisa Mayo could be influenced by how he is profiled by head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Even for Chiefs, early criticism on new striker Flavio Silva could get them to keep looking for a reliable striker, a number nine who could carry the scoring responsibilities.

Nabi conceded in January that Makabi Lilepo is a winger by trade but he was forced to play him as a striker, as Amakhosi were short of that type of a forward, physically imposing and able to finish, although they also acquired Tashreeq Morris.

Should the Portuguese striker take time to settle, the Glamour Boys are seemingly contemplating bidding for Mayo, after his father revealed there were informal enquiries from the Soweto giants to KickOff.com, although the former Cape Town City star has a two-year contract left with CR Belouizdad.

The biggest question for Chiefs could be whether Mayo has the capabilities to lead the line, as adding him to the roster could be duplicating players they already have in the number ten roles (as position he played at City).

"If you look at the player, he's also not with the current Bafana setup, then you ask yourself questions, why is he not there? Is he good enough to play for Bafana?" Amakhosi legend Tsepo Masilela said on Soccerbeat YouTube Channel.

"When you come to Kaizer Chiefs, I don't really think he's that finisher we're looking for, a top striker, 15 (goals a season striker). When (Mayo) is hot he's hot but when he's not hot, you start scratching your head a bit.

"I'd say a no for Kaizer Chiefs because in their attacking, they have 'Mdu' (Mduduzi Shabalala), (Mfundo) Vilakazi, Lilepo, (Pule) Mmodi, we're still looking for that striker, a finisher. We're hungry for that top striker, they'll have to go buy that strikers, top finishers are very rare and hard to get but if you have you splash the money on that position," Masilela insisted.

Chiefs were prepared to splash the cash on Mayo prior to last season but were moments late, after their bid apparently was made after the Citizens had just accepted an offer in a region of R20 million from Belouizdad.
