Chiefs take stance on Velebayi and Baartman saga

Kaizer Chiefs' Commercial and Marketing Director Jessica Motaung has revealed the club's current stance on the ongoing dispute surrounding the signings of Asanele Velebayi and Luke Baartman.

The Soweto giants are reported to have agreed deals with the duo, who were generally understood to have become free agents following Cape Town Spurs' relegation to the ABC Motsepe Foundation, which renders the club an amateur team.

However, the Cape Town-based club has hit back, reportedly claiming that the duo remain contracted to Spurs, despite the club's amateur status. The matter was heard by PSL Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) on Monday.

On the same day, Motaung addressed questions over the situation during the club's kit unveiling at Kaizer Chiefs Village.

"I think what’s important is that we’re in the business of doing things that won’t interfere with other clubs," Motaung said.

"We want to follow certain procedures, and that relates to any other player we’re looking at.

"So, we’re taking a very professional approach in terms of integrating and bringing the players into the team, so we will make sure we only make announcements when the time is right – so watch this space.

"But certainly, we can’t be engaging on players who are still with teams or still contracted. Once there are any changes, we will make those announcements.

"There’s a process; it needs to be followed. Once it’s done, we will make announcements."

Should Chiefs walk away victorious in the dispute for the pair, Velebayi and Baartman would become Amakhosi's seventh and eighth signings ahead of the new season.

So far, Nkanyisa Shinga, Flavio Silva and Ethan Chislett have been unveiled, along with former Buccaneers Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako.

Siphesihle Ndlovu has also been signed from SuperSport United.
