Do Chiefs have genuine goalkeeping concerns?

Kaizer Chiefs’ return from their pre-season tour of Holland has come with persistent goalkeeping debates.

For all these deliberations which have included the club being linked with Sekhukhune United’s Renaldo Leaner, Chiefs still have Brandon Petersen, Bruce Bvuma, and Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari in their books.

Leaner has spent two years at Sekhukhune but hasn’t set himself as clear first choice as yet so there will be reasons of reservations about him.

Why then is there so much talk about the goalkeeping department at Chiefs?

Could it be that they were spoilt in the years they had the generational talent of Itumeleng Khune?

With the keepers at Chiefs, Bvuma is the longest serving and has only ever played for Amakhosi through his professional career.

The 30-year-old had the most minutes last season conceding 23 and keeping eight clean sheets.

He has divided opinion about whether he is the right fit for first choice at the club or should just be kept as a backup option.

His chance last season came after Petersen stood in front of him in the queue.

Petersen played twice in November and December before being brought back to play in the Nedbank Cup final and the last two league games.

As he nears his 31st birthday, Petersen will want to be playing instead of being on the bench and has started pre-season standing in front.

Ntwari appears to have lost the trust of Nasreddine Nabi after his first season ended with seven appearances, one clean sheet and 11 goals conceded.

The expectation was that the 25-year-old would establish himself as the clear first choice but didn’t make good of his chance at the start of the season and has since not played since November.

For any keeper to be brought in, he will have to make way which is why his name has been surrounded by transfer talk.
