Third time unlucky for South African clubs

The Buccaneers lost 1-0 in Sousse last night – the second time in two years that they’ve fallen at the final hurdle.

In 2013 they embarked on an amazing run in the CAF Champions League before losing 3-1 in the Final against Egyptian powerhouses Al-Ahly.

This after beating the likes of TP Mazembe and Zamalek, but a 1-1 draw at Orlando Stadium gave the Egyptians the advantage, and they cruised to a 2-0 victory in Cairo.

Back in 2001, Mamelodi Sundowns came ever so close to winning the CAF Champions League. Ted Dumitru was in charge and looked on as his side were held 1-1 at home by Al-Ahly, who then thumped the Brazilians 3-0 at home for a 4-1 aggregate win.

As it stands, South Africa clubs have only tasted inter-continental success twice – Pirates in the African Champions Cup in 1995, and Kaizer Chiefs in the 2001 African Cup Winners’ Cup.
