Pirates - continental champions in 1995 and Champions League finalists in 2013 - will on Sunday battle Al-Ahly in Egypt for a place in the CAF Confederation Cup Final.
"I said it before, Pirates has given us hope to go into Africa," says Mosimane.
"I respect them. For me they are the best team in South Africa on the continent because they proved it. We can argue and say whatever... history says it, the facts are there.
"Locally, Sundowns is the best team. We have six PSL trophies, that's it. You can't argue continentally and locally.
"The other trophies, yes Ajax can win. Anybody can win other trophies, they are there to give motivation and also save us our jobs as coaches, that at least we win a trophy.
"The big one is the Champions League and League title, that's it."
The former Bafana Bafana boss feels he has unfinished business on the continent. The Brazilians suffered an early exit from the Champions League following their PSL triumph in 2013/14.
"Africa has been in my system. I call it an adventure, my safari. I don't think I finished what I wanted to finish in Africa with Bafana and that's another main reason I came to Sundowns because I want to play in the Champions League.
"I know the team wants Champions League and supports Champions League so I am here now, I have an opportunity.
"The big one is the Champions League, it is very big and is important for Sundowns' image and integrity.
"I think everybody is proud of Orlando Pirates' success in the Conferations and also their success was also in the Champions League. It's about time we match and show that we are also good in Africa."
