Ajax Cape Town confirm CAF participation

The Urban Warriors had announced their withdrawal from the tournament last week, citing logistical and safety problems, yet following a meeting with Safa this week, are now back in African competition, as revealed earlier by this publication.

The Cape club have now confirmed that they will indeed be travelling to Angola for Saturday’s fixture against Sagrada Esperanca.

“After a fruitful meeting between the representatives of the South African Football Association (Safa) and Ajax Cape Town held on Monday, Ajax agreed to withdraw their decision of not playing the CAF Confederation match against Sagrada Esperanca on Saturday, 13 February 2016, in Dundo, Angola, subject to SAFA providing Ajax with all the information which was previously requested, which included full details of the aircraft to be used to transport the team internally and a full detailed itinerary during the stay in Angola,” read a statement release by the club.

“At the meeting, Ajax CT assured Safa of their commitment to participate in the CAF Confederation Cup, as the club had carefully planned the trip, ensuring that the players had all been vaccinated in accordance to travelling requirements and had obtained their visas.

“Although the reservation for the flight from Cape Town to Luanda had lapsed, Ajax undertook to do their utmost to try and reinstate the booking on their return to Cape Town, which they managed to do.

“Although the itinerary for the trip is still outstanding and therefore we are not aware of departure or arrival times, hotel reservations etc, Ajax Cape Town has decided to fulfil the fixture as at this point in time, Safa have provided the club with the necessary information to appease the club with regards to the safety of the players and travelling staff.

“The 18-man squad will depart from Cape Town International Airport on Friday morning to start Ajax Cape Town 2016 CAF Confederation Cup campaign.”
