The weight of Kaizer Chiefs' opponents in the CAF Champions League this weekend is demonstrated by the fact that all of the Tanzanian players that have played in South Africa have once been on Simba SC's books.
Simba are a powerhouse not only in Tanzania where they have been serial winners of the league but also throughout East Africa, with their relevance having also spread to the PSL.
Not many Tanzanian players have played in South Africa but the eight that have found their way here have all had connections with Simba from as far as the first year of the PSL in 1996.
All these players played for Simba on their way to the PSL or had stints with the 21-time league champions after leaving South Africa.
From Iddy Pazzi, Bakari Malima, Nteze John Lungu all the way to Mrisho Ngasa and Uhuru Seleman Mwambungu, they have all played for Simba.
Wekundu wa Msimbazi – as Simba are known – have been leading the rise of Tanzanian football and proof of that is they are in the last eight for the second time in the last three years.
Chiefs host Simba on Saturday in the first leg with the second leg being played next Saturday in Dar es Salaam, with the winner set to reach the semi-finals for the first time since the competition became known as the Champions League.
