Chiefs ran riot at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening despite having just over 30% of ball possession with Eric Mathoho, a Samir Nurkovic brace and Leonardo Castro putting Amakhosi one foot into the semi-final.
The Tanzanian Premier League champions who beat Al Ahly to win Group A last played a game 18 days ago but Gomes is adamant it's neither that nor underestimating Chiefs due to their dismal domestic form.
"It's not a good reason to explain why we lost today, we don't have an excuse, we weren't tough enough for this kind of match, it's very important to very aggressive particularly in the duels," Gomes said in the post-match press conference.
"Kaizer Chiefs, we knew very well, even if they're in a bad position in the local league. As I said before the match, Chiefs are a very good team, very good offensively and today they have done a clean sheet which proves they are solid.
"Even with their bad situation in the league, we didn't underestimate them."
The Tanzanian giants welcome Chiefs for the second leg in Dar es Salaam at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Saturday 22 May.
