Downs get PSL raw deal? 'All over the world, it doesn't happen'

The PSL has put itself in a position of being liable to all manner of accusations with the decision to continue with the league programme on the same day Mamelodi Sundowns play a huge CAF Champions League match.

Sundowns will host Pyramids in the first leg of the Champions League final at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday (15:00).

However, the mood around such a massive encounter final has been somewhat damped by the League not adjusting the domestic calendar to give respect to the magnitude of the occasion.

Though the Chloorkop-based side have already been crowned league champions, there is still a lot to play for in that space, in the final round of fixtures, except in the case of Orlando Pirates, who will play their final game next week Wednesday.

There is still the relegation play-off battle involving Cape Town City, SuperSport United, and Golden Arrows, while the biggest-supported teams in the country, Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates, are also playing at the same time as Sundowns on Saturday.

As a result, the men in Yellow and Blue will not have the undivided attention of the football fraternity in Mzansi and, as former footballer Brent Carelse has suggested, everywhere in the world, there usually are no domestic matches on the same day the Champions League final is playing.

"I think it's a bit strange because ideally you'd want Sundowns only to be playing and also try to get as many supporters to the stadium, to support them, regardless of what club you support," Carelse told KickOff.com.

"I think it's important for us as football people to support Sundowns on Saturday because obviously they're representing the country.

"It's very strange there would be PSL matches on the same day you play Champions League final. All over the world, that doesn't happen, but here in South Africa, it happens."

He, however, conceded that after the Royal AM saga that dragged on for months, the League could have run out of calendar dates.

"But I can also say the reason for that is the Royal AM saga, which obviously put some games back. But under normal circumstances, that shouldn't happen."
