Former Real Madrid boss picks Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo

Former Real Madrid and Spain boss Vicente del Bosque has given his verdict in the debate regarding who the better player is between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The question as to who the best footballer is between the two superstars is one that has divided opinion worldwide for years now.

Del Bosque, who guided Spain to triumph at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and also helped Los Blancos claim numerous pieces of silverware – including the UEFA Champions League trophy twice – during his time in charge of the Madrid club, has now given his answer to the infamous question, and it may surprise some.

"Messi is the best and I'm going to tell you why, I'm not [saying it] to discredit Cristiano," he told Canal Sur.

"[Messi] is a kid from the street, from the neighbourhood. One of those [players] who we played with and he [would] made fun of you on the pitch.

"That's why he's the best player of the world."

Ronaldo and Messi have dominated the biggest individual awards over the past decade and have won multiple trophies throughout their careers, and both continue to break records today, even in their mid-thirties.

The duo have a combined 11 Ballon d'Or titles between them, with the Argentine having six Golden Balls to the Portugal captain's five.
