Bafana Bafana's change in approach surprised Africa Cup of Nations hosts Egypt

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter was pleased with the team's display in attack, following their memorable victory over Africa Cup of Nations hosts Egypt.

Bafana were nowhere near convincing in attack during the group stages, scoring just one goal in their three matches. They did very little to threaten their three opponents Ivory Coast, Namibia and Morocco, but they were more adnenturous in their 1-0 victory over the Pharaohs.

The introduction of goal scorer Thembinkosi Lorch made a big difference, as he combined well with the likes of Percy Tau and Lebo Mothiba. In midfield Bafana were solid with Bongani Zungu, Kamohelo Mokotjo and the returning Dean Furman, while left back Sifiso Hlanti kept Egyptian superstar Mo Salah in his pocket. This allowed Bafana to attack a bit more without worrying about the threat posed by Salah and the side's other dangerman Trezeguet.

"From the first couple of games we were not 100 percent satisfied with our attacking play. Our movement around the box was not clear and we had to improve on that," Baxter said after the game.

"Showing the movement we wanted to make was one, two, we knew the crowd was another aspect but the most important thing was playing a game that I don't think Egypt expected us to play. They would have expected us to play deeper, and therefore we wanted to press higher and in that way try to surprise them with that game play. That surprised them and allowed us to have a foothold in the game," he concluded.
