Chiefs' hope for Pirates & Downs league upsets revealed?

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates will be facing a big problem, one which Kaizer Chiefs have already shown they have the capacity to overcome under a new technical team led by Nasreddine Nabi.

Chiefs were seemingly at a disadvantage before the start of the Betway Premiership season after the PSL postponed league fixtures by at least six weeks, by the time the MTN8 and CAF tournaments began.

As they did not qualify for the aforementioned competitions, there were suggestions and fears they would struggle when the league began, with no competitive games, in what turned into a logistical headache.

However, reassurance came from Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr that they had assembled a technical team with the highest expertise, particularly Strength and Conditioning Coach Safi Majdi, who is held in high regard in North Africa.

Amakhosi showed no signs of lack of match fitness or conditioning issues in their first three league games and their former coach Muhsin Ertugral commended Nabi for keeping the team in top shape despite a long delay before the Premiership could start.

"His handwriting in the team [is impressive], it's difficult to periodize a team in South African football after PSL released fixtures very late into the season. What are you doing [in the meantime] because the PSL [start] was with two months to go?" Ertugral asked on SoccerBeat YouTube Channel.

"So, periodization again, one month [break again]. So, it's up and down, you need to periodize the team, which is the most difficult part for coaches, [this] up and down.

"I'd rather play every week, every three days and stay in the competition. There's always these breaks, I was never a friend of it."

With another month of no league football due to the MTN8 final [for Pirates three weeks] and FIFA break, there could be shocking results once the league season resumes towards the end of October, with Sundowns and Bucs the only teams yet to drop points.

The Brazilians showed signs of rustiness in their first few games in the MTN8, after eventually being knocked out by Stellenbosch FC in the semi-finals and only starting to pick up tempo after playing in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.

Initial suspicions were that the delay of league fixtures also affected the Tshwane giants, after they had a bye in the Champions League first preliminary round.

Pirates, on the other hand, were also sluggish in the Champions League first preliminary round [drawing 0-0 with SC-Disciples away], before hitting their stride in the second preliminary round and finding their rhythm, in tandem with MTN8 fixtures, before a postponed league start.
