Zungu’s edge in European return

While Bongani Zungu's next move remains not confirmed, the former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder will have it smooth should he decide on returning to Europe.

Zungu spent two years during his second stint at Sundowns after having had another three-year spell prior to moving to Europe in 2016.

The 31-year-old has a major weapon in his pocket in that he carries an EU passport which was used for his registration for the CAF Champions League since the 2022/23 season.

He spent six years playing Europe for clubs in Portugal, France, and Scotland and now has a French passport (French passport M0-----2).

Zungu was contracted to French club Amiens for five years (2017-2022) even though he went on loan for a season at Scottish club Rangers in between.

To be eligible for a French passport you must have lived in France for five consecutive years before applying for citizenship – which is evidently what qualified Zungu for this passport.

The French passport falls under the European Union allowing holders right of free movement in the EU with passports not stamped when entering and leaving the Schengen Area.

It (French passport) ranks amongst the top 20 in the world in terms of visa-free travel and allow for an easier return to Europe for Zungu.

France allows its citizens to have several passports at once to circumvent certain travel restrictions.

As of July 2024, the French passport allows travels to 162 countries visa-free.

Zungu remains eligible for Bafana as he will continue also having his South African passport with dual (or more) citizenship allowed in the country.

There has been mention of the towering midfielder also moving to the Gulf Region where his financial demands will be met at the blink of an eye.
