'Swallows' history is going to die with the club'

Moroka Swallows legend Andries "Chaka Chaka" Mpondo has revealed where things went wrong for the Dube Birds' finances amidst talk of an impending sale to Marumo Gallants chairman Abram Sello.

Mpondo says what is happening at Swallows right now is painful as it also affects the club's former players' legendary status.

The Dube Birds are about to be sold to Marumo Gallants FC chairman Abram Sello for not less than R40 million, depending on the Premier Soccer League's approval.

"The club does get the PSL grant every month, it's just that Swallows have bad management," Mpondo says.

"They don't want to oil the machine that is making money for them, but they expect to make money. All they do with the grant is to [allegedly] line their pockets.

"As a player, it's very difficult to perform on an empty stomach. What's painful is that while the players don't get their salaries, the club management's families continue to live a fancy life.

"So, what is about to happen with Swallows is very painful because we are going the same route the likes of Bloemfontein Celtic and Bidvest Wits took. Their good history, nobody is talking about it anymore.

"So, Swallows' history is going to die with the club. For example, Orlando Pirates legends walk tall because Pirates are still there, hence they feel honoured.

"The only thing the Swallows legends will be remembered for is their contribution to South African football.

"Do you still remember the stories about Swallows going into liquidation? They were folded. That's the time the club should have been auctioned and [they should have] allowed people to bid for it.

"But instead, what happened is they decided to offer it to David Mogashoa. I was an employee at Swallows following my retirement from playing, I was coaching in their development structures, I was with their U17 team.

"And up to now, Swallows still owe me my salaries. I have documents supporting what I'm saying.

"Today, we are jobless. We've been jobless since 2018. What happened is Swallows were struggling to pay Dobsonville Stadium, who then decided to liquidate the club to recover the R1.6 million Swallows owed them for using their facility.

"But instead, the liquidator sold the club for a mere R140 000."
