Arsenal's unbeaten record in the Premier League came to an end following a 1-0 defeat away to Newcastle United on Saturday night.
Captain Martin Odegaard wasn't passed fit for the Gunners as Kai Havertz earned a start in the number ten role, with Newcastle on a high after crushing Manchester United 3-0 in the Carabao Cup in midweek.
Following a quiet opening, the first shot in anger came around the half-hour mark where a move involving Bruno Guimaraes saw Callum Wilson take aim and volleyed over with David Raya in sixes and sevens.
Raya was presented more work later in the half as he scrambled off his line to retrieve a loose ball off the grasp of Anthony Gordon following a glancing header by Wilson.
Arsenal did come to life moments ahead of halftime after Gabriel Martinelli beat Kieran Trippier to cut in on the left and fire in a shot, but goalkeeper Nick Pope smothered.
In the second half, the home team decided to make a substitution where Dan Burn made way to see Tino Livramento come on in his place.
Newcastle looked dangerous on the counter-attack earlier in the second period and nearly profited from one through Gordon but the Gunners recovered and cleared their defensive lines.
Gordon did make the Gunners pay in the midway phase of the second half when he tapped in a loose ball off Joelinton, as the Video Assistant Review (VAR) found no offside, foul or the ball being out of play at the time it was played in.
The Gunners went all out for the equaliser with runs out wide and in the channels from Martinelli, Havertz and Leandro Trossard, but couldn't get past the Magpies.
Arsenal continued to push as seconds ticked away, but the Magpies held firm to grab the win and hand the visitors their first defeat of the season.
