UEFA Champions League match report Real Madrid v Shakhtar Donetsk

Real Madrid got their UEFA Champions League campaign off to a losing start after a surprise 3-2 loss to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday evening.

Madrid made wholesale changes from the side that lost against Candiz, with Eder Militao partnering Raphael Varane in the heart of defence in the absence of the injured Sergio Ramos while the likes of Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos and Isco started on the bench.

Los Blancos had a shaky start and were punished just before the half-four mark as Tete broke the deadlock with a first-time strike into the bottom corner after being picked out by Viktor Korniyenko.

Zinedine Zidane's charges could not shake off their sloppy start, as Varane scored an own goal in the 33rd minute in an attempt to clear danger after goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Dentinho's initial effort.

The Ukrainian side were dreaming three minutes before the break after Manor Solomon slotted a low shot into the bottom corner to make it 3-0 after a clever back-heel by Tete sent him clear on goal in the centre of the box.

Madrid launched a comeback nine minutes after the break when Luka Modric pulled a goal back with a rocket from outside the box that flew into the top corner.

Vinicius Junior got the second goal back for the hosts just seconds after coming on after the hour-mark as he won the ball with a high press on the edge of the box, before bursting his way inside the box to fire a low shot past Trubin.

Tete should have made it 4-2 for Luis Castro's troops two minutes later after going clear on goal from a through ball but he was indecisive as Courtois came out to close the angle and made a great save with his legs in a one-on-one situation.

Tete broke away again for the visitors in the last ten minutes from a counter-attack and setup Marlos to score into a gaping net with a square pass but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Federico Valverde thought he had levelled matters for Los Blancos in stoppage time with a deflected shot from the edge of the box but the goal was ruled out for offside by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) after Vinicius Junior obstructed Trubin's view in an offside position, handing the visitors a famous win.
