Manchester City fumbled at the quarter-final stage of UEFA Champions League after going down 3-1 to Olympique Lyon on Saturday evening.
Despite reports of moving from City, Eric Garcia was preferred in the defence, while the French Ligue 1 outfit stayed unchanged from the side that eliminated Juventus.
Prior to the match, City had not managed to beat Lyon in two previous encounters in the Champions League- a record the side from Manchester were eager to set straight.
Kyle Walker almost had the ball in his own net five minutes gone while trying to chest a ball down to his goalkeeper Ederson, who acted quickly to stop the ball trickling into the corner.
Lyon raced in front after 24 minutes when Maxwel Cornet showed quick thinking to pick up Karl Toko Ekambi's loose ball outside the area before sending a cracking low finish past Ederson.
Anthony Lopes refused the Citizens any entry after turning Kevin De Bruyne's probing free-kick from the left channel beyond goal.
Lyon were on the prowl ten minutes from halftime, as Memphis Depay came close with a free-kick from range while City introduced Riyad Mahrez for Fernandinho.
However, City were all square a minute before the final 20 after Sterling carved an opening to De Bruyne from the area, who in-turn beat Lopes with a composed finish.
Moussa Dembele put Les Gones back in front on 79 minutes after sending Houssem Aouar's delivery past Ederson in the area with calls for an offside dismissed by the Video Assistant Referee.
Just a minute after Sterling missed an open goal for the Citizens, Lyon put the final nail in the coffin three minutes from time when Dembele completed his brace with a tap in after Ederson failed to handle Aouar's shot, giving City another quarter-final exit
