UEFA Champions League match report Atletico Madrid v Juventus

Atletico Madrid rallied back from two goals down to secure a 2-2 draw with Serie A champions Juventus in their UEFA Champions League Group D encounter.

Maurizio Sarri did not tamper with the side that was held by Fiorentina in Serie A, with Juan Cuadrado replacing the injured Douglas Costa. Meanwhile, Diego Simeone also virtually kept the same side that lost to Real Sociedad as Thomas Lemar got a start ahead of Vitolo.

Atletico were eager to find an early goal and they almost went ahead in the 12th minute from a corner, with Jose Gimenez getting a free header but his effort missed slightly over the bar.

Bianconeri were sitting deep midway through the first stanza and that frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo, who was forced to take long range strikes, none of which threatened goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Kieran Trippier was offering the hosts a lot of width going forward in the closing stages of the first stanza, with Ronaldo not tracking back but the Juventus defence were able to deal with the crosses in the area.

The Old Lady started the second stanza positively, as Cuadrado broke the deadlock three minutes after the break with a rocket that found the top corner following a square pass from Gonzalo Higuain.

Juventus extended their advantage five minutes after the hour-mark courtesy of Blaise Matuidi, who fired in a header past Oblak, following a cross from Alex Sandro on counter-attack.

Atletico were fired up to make a comeback as centre-back Stefan Savic pulled a goal back for them five minutes later with a close range finish from a goal-mouth scramble.

Sarri's men were living dangerously in the closing phases and they were made to pay as the hosts found the equaliser in the last minute through Hector Herrera, who found the finishing touches inside the box following a brillaint free-kick by Trippier.

Other result:

Bayer Leverkusen 1-2 Lokomotiv Moscow

Bayer Leverkusen began opened their Group D campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow.

Grzegorz Krychowiak and Dmitriy Barinov got the goals for the Russian outfit to cancel out Benedikt Höwedes' own goal.
