Robert Lewandowski equals Lionel Messi UEFA Champions League record

After helping put Barcelona to the sword, Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski equalled a personal record held by Lionel Messi in the UEFA Champions League.

On Friday evening, Lewandowski continued his remarkable form season, which has seen him score 54 goals across all competitions, when he netted again during Bayern's remarkable 8-2 Champions League quarter-final victory over Barcelona.

In doing so, the Poland international took his tally to 14 goals in the Champions League this season, matching his opponent-on-the-night Messi's best-ever return in a single campaign, which he set in the 2011/21 season.

Both players trail overall record-holder Cristiano Ronaldo, however, who scored a competition record 17 goals in the 2013/14 campaign with Real Madrid, and the Portugal superstar surpassed the 15-goal mark on two other occasions as well.

Lewandowski' strike was also his 50th goal for Bayern in the competition, achieved in just his 60th UCL appearance for the club, and saw him become the first player for the Bundesliga giants to score in eight consecutive Europan matches, breaking Jürgen Klinsmann's record of seven.

In fact, the 31-year-old was only the fourth player in the competition's history - which includes its previous carnation as the European Cup - to do so for any club, following in the footsteps of Ronaldo (twice), Ruud van Nistelrooy and Luis Aragones

Lewandowski and his teammates' performance on the night also ensured that the 2019/20 Champions League season will be the first in 15 years in which neither Ronaldo nor Messi feature in semi-finals, with the former having been knocked out following Juventus' defeat to Lyon.
