Jose Mourinho reacts to Dele Alli tantrum after substitution in UEFA Champions League

Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho has explained why midfielder Dele Alli lost his temper after being substituted during their UEFA Champions League defeat to RB Leipzig.

Alli was pictured visibly disgruntled and surprised by Mourinho's decision to haul him off in the 64th minute for Erik Lamela in their last-16 tie at the Tottenham Stadium.

And as he got to the technical area he appeared to throw a water bottle in anger behind the coach and his assistant, which Mourinho claims is down to his own display and not his tactical decision.

"I think he was angry with his performance, not with me," Mourinho said, as per the Mirror. "I think he understands why I took him off and our performance improved."

Mourinho went on to defend his side's display in the first-leg tie, with Timo Werner's penalty giving the Bundesliga side a vital away goal ahead of the return leg in Germany.

"There are two perspectives - an amazing group and amazing guys but another side you see how we are at the moment.

"It's a situation like going to fight with a gun without bullets. You can say we had luck in some moments, but a great goalkeeper made two magnificent saves.

"I'm not worried with the 1-0 - we can go there and win. What worries me is that these are our players for the next however many matches."

Spurs next challenge arrives this Saturday with a London derby against fourth-placed Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
