Andrea Pirlo insists Juventus career isn't over

The 36-year-old was unable to add to his two European Cup winners medals with AC Milan after losing Saturday’s Final to treble-winners Barcelona, with pre-match speculation insisting the talented Italian international would leave the Old Lady should they not win in Berlin.

Images on Pirlo in tears after the loss were quickly spread all over social media, with many feeling it was a sign of the veteran’s departure from the Bianconeri, despite having a year left on his contract.

Yet Pirlo has denied such claims, insisting it was just an overflow of emotions following the loss.

"Were my tears a goodbye to Juventus? No, they were for the defeat," Pirlo told Sky Sport Italia. "It is the kind of opportunity that I will rarely get again."

Juventus director general Giuseppe Marotta felt no need to link Pirlo’s tears to an exit, though he admitted that plans will be made to replace the midfielder should he leave.

"Andrea is an icon of Italian football and has become an icon of Juventus too," he stated. "I think his tears are understandable for a player who gave us such strong emotions over the years and it's only right he should feel those emotions too.

"Now that the season is over, we will begin meetings with the players who are subject to transfer speculation.

"It's not easy to replace Pirlo, [but] we have some eclectic players like Claudio Marchisio, while [coach Massimiliano] Allegri is capable of finding other alternatives."

Pirlo, who has won four Serie A titles in a row with Juve since joining from rivals AC Milan in 2011, will now join up with his international teammates as Italy prepare for their Euro 2016 qualifier on Friday evening against Croatia.
