Top flight matches will be played without spectators until April 3 as the country seek measures to combat this deadly scourge that's since plagued the Europeans.
Last Sunday's eagerly awaited Derby d'Italia between Juventus and Inter Milan was to be played behind closed doors but was abruptly cancelled at the eleventh hour.
No less than 10 league matches coupled with this week's Coppa Italia semi-final second leg clashes involving Juventus and Inter have been set aside since the virus hit Italian shores.
This virus has also hit the UEFA Champions League with Italian supporters not allowed to travel to Valencia for Atalanta's last 16 second-leg as that fixture will also be played without supporters.
Some teams across the league had initially ordered matches to be postponed for a later date than to play behind closed doors.
However, with fixtures piling up over other already postponed matches and suitable dates hard to find, the authorities felt it better to start playing matches behind closed doors for 30 days.
The much anticipated clash between Juventus and Inter will now take place this coming Sunday after both clubs went to-and-fro over a suitable date for this fixture.
"It's a very tough moment, our goal is to carry out the season with the maximum uniformity, without creating any imbalance," Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta told Sky in Italy.
"We're going through days of big changes. To play behind closed doors could be the only tool to finish the season in light of the restrictions that the government is rightly pointing out to us."
