Messi leaves France with one last honour

Lionel Messi has now received one final honour before his time at Paris Saint-German officially comes to an end.

The 36-year-old's two-year stint with PSG will come to an end on Friday, after which he will depart for his new side Inter Miami in the United States.

Although he will leave Les Parisiens having won three titles in two seasons at the Parc des Princes, his time at the club tailed off badly as he was booed on several occasions by a section of PSG supporters, including in his last match for the club.

The jeering incidents also left his teammate Kylian Mbappe puzzled, with the France captaining questioning the treatment Messi received from some of their own fans earlier this month.

However, despite the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner leaving Paris on a bit of a sour note, he has now been recognised for his productive output in the 2022/23 campaign.

With 16 goals and 16 assists in 32 Ligue 1 games, Messi has been voted as the league's best foreign player last season.

The Ligue de Football Professionnel used a poll to decide the winner, with the Argentina talisman receiving more than 52% of the votes, beating the likes of Folarin Balogun, Jonathan David, and Alexis Sanchez to the award.

The manner in which he was treated during in his last few months at PSG seems to not have bothered the former FC Barcelona star too much, though.

He told beIN SPORTS: "I think in the beginning it was something wonderful. But then some people started to treat me differently, a part of the Paris supporters.

"I think the vast majority still see me and treat me as they did at the beginning, but there was a fracture with a significant group of the Paris fans, which obviously wasn't my intention, far from it.

"It happened just as it had happened before with [Kylian] Mbappe, with Neymar. I know that's the way they behave.

"I'll take away with me the people who respected me, as I always respected everyone since I arrived and that's all."
