PSG fail to extend Ligue 1 lead after shock loss

Paris Saint-Germain had their lead at the top of Ligue 1 reduced to three points following a 1-0 defeat to Rennes on Sunday night.

Warren Zaire-Emery made his first Ligue 1 start at the age of 16, as PSG started with Kylian Mbappe to the bench after the 2-0 win over Angers.

It was a tough opening for either side though PSG were closest to the lead when Lionel Messi lashed Juan Bernat's teasing cross high and wide of the mark.

Rennes starved the visitors from momentum at the other area of the field and this then had Messi as well as Neymar Junior drop deep and play in their own half much of the time.

The host opened up the league leaders on the half-hour mark where a volley by Arnaud Kalimuendo brought a sharp stop out of PSG shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

PSG made a fast opening to the second period and a save by Steve Mandanda kept out a towering header from Pereira following Messi and Neymar's short-corner routine.

However, reinforcements for the home side arrived ten minutes into the second half, with Mbappe in for Hugo Ekitike before Achraf Hakimi entered for Nordi Mukiele.

Rennes made the breakthrough midway in the second half after Hamari Traore attacked Adrien Truffert's reverse ball from the byline and side-footed past Donnarumma.

Mandanda denied PSG a point in the closing stages with a stupendous save off a cracking volley from Bernat after a ball in from Carlos Soler.

PSG still worked openings as the minutes ticked away where Neymar closed-in from a clever pass by Hakimi, but the host clear their lines and secured the win.
