Gallery: Chaos between Lionel Messi's Paris Saint-Germain & Olympique Marseille

Paris Saint-Germain and Olympique Marseille's intense rivalry continued when the sides locked horns on Sunday night, and it served up some chaotic moments, with riot shields being used to protect Lionel Messi at one point.

Before the tie took place, Marseille star Dimitri Payet and club president Jacques-Henri Eyraud urged fans to be on their best behaviour during the derby fixture that has come to be known as Le Classique, but their words seemingly fell on deaf ears.

While the game was underway, supporters hurled missiles in the form of paper and bottles on to the pitch.

With tensions rising as the match went on, more objects were thrown at the players on the field, forcing security to use riot shields to protect Messi and Neymar whenever they took a corner for PSG.

Both teams thought they had scored an opener in the match, but neither Neymar nor Arkadiusz Milik's strike stood after the video assistant referee (VAR) got involved.

Later, just before the hour mark, Jorge Sampaoli's side were given a boost as the VAR once again had a say in the tie. The referee had initially awarded a handball against Marseille's Cengiz Under after a coming together with Achraf Hakimi.

However, the referee was told to have a look at the incident again on the VAR monitor, and changed his decision, sending the Moroccan defender off for the denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity.

The most bizarre moment of the match, though, took place while six-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi was launching a PSG counter-attack – a fan wearing a puffer jacket and jeans appeared from nowhere and caught up with the forward, before being abruptly removed by the stewards.

With the match having ended in a 0-0 draw, Les Parisiens remain comfortable at the top of the Ligue 1 table while Marseille jump into the top four.
