FC Barcelona news: Josep Maria Bartomeu gives fresh update on Lionel Messi's future

Earlier in the month, reports from Spain suggested that Messi had grown disillusioned with life at Barcelona and was preparing to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

Barca president Bartomeu has since played down speculation that his star player will leave, and reiterated that position this past weekend when once again asked about the 33-year-old's future at the club.

"We've spoken, we are speaking and we will continue to speak with Messi," Bartomeu told Spain's TV3.

"He wants to finish his career here. We will definitely renew with him, I am in no doubt that he will stay here."

Bartomeu's comments come after Messi had become the first player in LaLiga history to both score and assist 20 or more goals in a single campaign following his assist for Arturo Vidal's match-winning goal against Real Valladolid on Saturday.
