Did Cape Town City shoot themselves in the foot?

An ex-footballer who was part of the Ajax Cape Town side that came narrowly close to winning the league title in 2011 under Foppe de Haan has sounded the death knell for Cape Town City amid their struggles.

City, having collected one point from their only match in the play-offs so far, a 0-0 stalemate with Orbit College, and are in a must-win situation as they battle Casric Stars up next, at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, on Wednesday.

The home side are also on one point having played to a goalless draw against Orbit on matchday one. Therefore, as it is, Orbit lead the table with two points.

City have been advised to field all their experienced players if they want to keep their status in the Betway Premiership.

"It's very difficult for Cape Town City," says former defender Lizo Mjempu.

"They had a chance to win their home game against Orbit College on Saturday. They should have made the most of their home advantage.

"It's going to be very tough for them, especially considering the strong record Casric Stars have at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium. I have been following them closely.

"I believe Casric will win today, or it might end in a draw. I don’t see Cape Town City leaving that stadium with all three points.

"Before the play-offs began, Cape Town City were my favourite to win. However, after I witnessed their performance on Saturday, I changed my mind," he adds, before pointing out the Citizens' shortcomings.

"They were not aggressive enough up front, and they left all their experienced players on the bench. They needed players like Thamsanqa Mkhize, Lorenzo Gordinho, and Thabo Nodada.

"They relied too much on younger players. If they do that again, their play-off journey may end here. Their experienced players must step up today."

Kick-off is at 15:00, and entrance is free.
