African champions rescued by Sekhukhune star

A Sekhukhune United star stole the show during a match between African champions Ivory Coast and one of the co-hosts for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Sekhukhune goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare was the hero of the night as Ivory Coast claimed victory over Canada in the 2025 Canadian Shield international tournament.

The two teams couldn't be separated after extra time, with the match ending in a 0-0 draw and proceeding to a penalty shoot-out.

Sangare stepped up in emphatic fashion during the shoot-out, saving two penalties from Canada's Tani Oluwaseyi and Luc de Fougerolles to hand Cote d'Ivoire a 5-4 victory.

His performance for the national team follows another strong season for Sekhukhune, whom he helped to a fourth-place finish in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations-winning keeper kept a formidable nine clean sheets in 23 appearances across all competitions for Babina Noko, as per Transfermarkt.

Elsewhere, recent reports suggest that Sekhukhune are set to part ways with the 39-year-old goalkeeper.

These reports coincide with the emergence of Renaldo Leaner at Sekhukhune, who has since been called up by Bafana Bafana and made his debut during their recent 2-0 win over Mozambique on Tuesday.
