The 10 most expensive signings of the January window

With the transfer window having closed, we take a look at the 10 most expensive signings made in January, including a number of Chelsea stars, a Liverpool attacker and Newcastle United's newest recruit!

The Blues spent almost €335 million (R6.2 billion) on eight players in January, with big names such as Mykhaylo Mudryk, Enzo Fernandez, Benoit Badiashile and Noni Madueke joining the London club.

In fact, Chelsea's expenditure in the latest window was higher than the combined amount spent on new players by teams in Ligue 1, the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and the EFL Championship.

2022 FIFA World Cup winner Fernandez broke the British record for being the most expensive signing in Premier League history when the Blues paid Benfica €121 million (R2.2 billion) to secure his services, with the deal for the Argentine surpassing the €117 million (R2.1 billion) Manchester City paid to sign Jack Grealish from Aston Villa in 2021.

Fernandez's new teammate Mudryk is also one of the most expensive signings of the window, having joined Chelsea from Shakhtar Donetsk for an initial fee of €70 million (R1.3 billion) after turning down a move to city rivals Arsenal at the last minute.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, completed a €45.6 million (R850 million) switch to Newcastle from Everton last weekend to become the Magpies' second-most expensive arrival ever. behind only Alexander Isak, who joined ahead of this season.

With the Geordie club currently in the Premier League's top four, they will be hoping Gordon boosts their hopes of qualifying for the 2023/24 UEFA Champions League campaign.
