Honey and pain for Nabi at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs' trend of coaches not being retained at Naturena after a season could be set to continue, as the hierarchy have seemingly lost confidence in head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Nabi appeared to have the backing of the Chiefs management towards the end of the campaign, after the Nedbank Cup run papered over the cracks of a poor league form and dismal performance in the Carling Knockout.

The odds, however, were against the Tunisian being retained, as no coach at the club has returned for at least two consecutive seasons since Steve Komphela spent nearly three seasons prior to resigning under duress in April 2018.

Since then, only Ernst Middendorp spent more than a season at the Soweto gitnat, though he was only given the second season after he joined midway in 2018/19 .

Even though the German catapulted the side to within a whisker of league glory, he was surprisingly relieved of his duties.

Amakhosi are rumoured to have sealed Nabi's fate, in spite of winning the Nedbank Cup.

The hierarchy, led by Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Jr. and Jessica Motaung, who is Marketing and Commercial Director, could not back the 59-year-old tactician in an interview on 947's MSW, appearing rather to blame him for not meeting expectations even though he was given carte blanche on new signings and technical team.

"We have a plan. We just come off a beautiful victory in the Nedbank Cup. It's been great in terms of how we've worked closely with the coach in recruitment process, we've been hand-in-hand with the players we brought in," said Motaung Jr. when asked if Nabi was staying or leaving.

"From our side, it's important we keep the positive energy. The coach is very much (part) of the plans, we're there, we want to celebrate the title and look (back) on the history that's made."

Jessica Motaung was a little more revealing in answering the same question.

"Obviously there's a lot of work to be done. We still have to review, it (winning the Nedbank Cup) doesn't change the fact that we have to review. But there's definitely a commitment from the board, everyone invested in the coach.

"We got him the players he wanted, he has his technical team and we're expecting him to continue doing the work. The season is not over guys, let's enjoy the glory," Jessica Motaung added.

Chiefs, lying ninth in the standings, are desperate to qualify for the MTN8, with two games remaining, against Sekhukhune United and Polokwane City.
