Williams' big error: 'Something was missing...'

William Shongwe, Ronwen Williams's former goalkeeper coach, has commented on the factors that may have contributed to the shot-stopper's performance against Borussia Dortmund.

Williams appeared nervous during the FIFA Club World Cup clash, which ended 4-3 in favor of the German club.

He was largely at fault for Dortmund's first goal after his wayward pass was intercepted Felix Nmecha, who intercepted and fired into an empty net.

"The scoreline tells the whole story; it was not one of his best games," Shongwe tells KickOff.

"Yes, the quality of the opposition was high, but there was definitely something lacking in Williams's focus. At this point, I can't pinpoint what went wrong."

Shongwe noted the whole defensive line and midfield were giving away possession, which showed that the opposition was of a higher caliber.

"The anticipation speed was high. The way they executed their high press allowed them to cover the field in an instant," he explained.

"This Sundowns team plays well when they have the ball, like every local team of ours, but these European teams are effective even without it. They read the game and anticipate the next move."

Regarding the back pass that led to a goal, Shongwe stated, "Williams was caught off guard by their speed of anticipation. European teams always wait for those moments when you're likely to lose your concentration."

He advised Williams to select the right moments to build from the back, emphasizing that this experience should contribute to his growth as a player.

"Next time he needs to read the situation before making a pass. What he sees might not be exactly what he thinks it is.

"During a match, your perspective can change in an instant. Ronwen shouldn't stop playing from the back though just because of what happened against Dortmund."
