Man City denied second spot by relegated outfit

Southampton 0-0 Manchester City

Manchester City missed the chance to go second on the Premier League table following a frustrating goalless draw against relegated Southampton on Saturday evening.

Five changes for City from the win over Wolverhampton Wanderers saw Manuel Akanji, James McAtee, Phil Foden, Rico Lewis and Erling Haaland recalled to the starting line-up.

The Citizens encountered a quiet start to the match, as the relegated host proved difficult to break down and attempted to play on the counter-attack.

City did have chances in the second half, but tremendous goalkeeping from Aaron Ramsdale denied Savinho, Haaland and Ruben Dias as it finished goalless.

Bournemouth 0-1 Aston Villa

Aston Villa kept their top-five hopes alive courtesy of a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Bournemouth out at the Vitality Stadium.

Ghanaian international Antoine Semenyo returned for the Cherries after missing the win over Arsenal, while Villa recalled Amadou Onana, Tyrone Mings, Lucas Digne and Jacob Ramsey to the starting eleven.

The Clarets took time to get going but eventually broke clear albeit on the stroke of halftime when Ollie Watkins arrowed a smart delivery from Morgan Rogers over the goal-line.

It wasn’t a good ending to the match for Unai Emery and his charges who saw Ramsey given his marching orders for a second bookable offence after fouling David Brooks.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-2 Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion ended their five-match winless run following a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in a mid-table encounter.

The Seagulls were without their top-scorer Joao Pedro, with Danny Welbeck given a start, while Rayan Ait-Nouri and Matheus Cunha picked out the home side’s eleven.

Cunha didn’t cover himself in glory around the half-hour mark as he upended Mats Wieffer to give away penalty which Welbeck tucked away to make it 1-0.

Within the final minutes, the Seagulls struck again and settled the contest when Brajan Gruda charged in-behind and lobbed the advancing Jose Sa.

Fulham 1-3 Everton

Everton overturned an early deficit to get the better of Fulham 3-1 in a fiercely contested encounter at Craven Cottage.

The Toffees came with four changes from the draw with Ipswich Town in Ashley Young, Michael Keane, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Jack Harrison, while Andreas Pereira and Ryan Sessegnon set out the Cottagers alterations.

Mexican Raul Jimenez put the host ahead in the opening-quarter with a towering header from a cross by Emile Smith Rowe.

The Toffees trailed for a large period but were on level terms on the stroke of halftime when Vitali Mykolenko slammed in a layoff from Doucoure.

Marco Silva’s boys were behind in the final exchanges as Keane got in-behind Pereira to head in from close-range following a corner by Dwight McNeil.

A third goal came in no less than a minute when Beto ran in on the left of the danger area and beat goalkeeper Bernd Leno with a cleverly worked finish.

The Cottagers appeared to have earned a penalty in a lively closing spell, but it was overturned by the Video Assistant Referee as the Toffees snatched maximum points.

Ipswich Town 0-1 Brentford

Brentford registered a fourth successive win to maintain their place in the top-half after seeing off the relegated Ipswich Town 1-0.

Buoyed by last Sunday’s dramatic victory over Manchester United, the Bees didn’t take long to get going and saw Kevin Schade nod in inside the opening-quarter of the match.

In light of the chances thereafter, no further goals were presented by either side and ensured the full haul of points for Thomas Frank and co.
