USM Alger pip Young Africans to Confed Cup title

USM Alger became the first Algerian side to win the CAF Confederation Cup after seeing off Young Africans on the away-goal rule in the two-legged final.

Alger named a solitary make-up from the first-leg as Messala Merbah rolled in, but Djuma Shabani and Dickson Job notably featured for the Tanzanian giants.

It didn't take the outfit from the East African region too long to make their presence felt where a penalty seven minutes gone following a coming-together saw Shabani step up and finish calmly.

Buoyed by a lively home crowd, Alger were keen to maintain their overall cushion granted the shift in pendulum and showed sound defensive fortitude to keep Young Africans at bay.

USM Alger managed to have a decent scare ahead of the half-hour mark from a pin-point supply to the area, but the purported attempt failed to cause trouble let alone find the net.

At the other end, Young Africans carved out a threat through danger-man Fiston Mayele but he was kept in check and eventually denied a clear pathway.

Merbah was sacrificed by the host ahead of the second stanza, as Abderrahmane Meziane came on in the hope of adding to their resolve.

Young Africans were desperate to strengthen their grip on proceedings and were in-behind when Mayele latched on a flick-on to draw a save from goalkeeper Oussama Benbot.

The host got back on equal terms when a foul in the area resulted in a penalty-kick, but Djiuigi Diarra smothered Zinedine Belaid and gathered the rebound too.

Both teams went thoroughly at each other before the close of play though neither were able to bulge the net as USM clinched the title on the away-goal rule.
