Ironically, the Togo international claimed the honour in 2008 when he beat off competition from Egypt's Mohamed Aboutrika and Ghana's Michael Essien, neither of whom were able to claim the coveted award despite their respective successes.
The Nigerian duo of Jay-Jay Okocha and Obafemi Martins are another pair of African stars who never walked away with the mantle of being the continent's best player, although the former did find himself on the podium on three separate occasions.
