Zim agent: SA clubs still ahead financially, but...

A Zimbabwean football agent has made bold financial claims about South African clubs following Knowledge Musona’s recent move to Scottland FC.

The rapidly rising Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League side signed the former Kaizer Chiefs star this week after his departure from Al-Okhdood in Saudi Arabia.

Musona’s move to Scottland saw him reunite with another ex-Amakhosi star, Khama Billiat, as well as his younger brother, Walter Musona, who also played in South Africa.

The Castle Lager PSL newcomers, based in Harare, are owned by billionaire and Member of Parliament Pedzai Sakupwanya.

Scottland FC has quickly become one of the league’s top teams, with Billiat reportedly amongst the highest-paid players in the ZPSL.

Now, football agent Godfrey Bakasa claims the Zimbabwean league is rapidly growing and closing the financial gap with SA’s Betway Premiership clubs.

"It is about the package, the league is improving now. At the end of the day, it is the US dollar that has the power right now," Bakasa told Pan Africa Football.

"The league is gaining popularity. It is a good thing that established and experienced players like Knowledge and Khama are coming back home.

"It is something that future generations will benefit from. It is not a short-term thing. Imagine playing with Khama and Musona. It is something that motivates you.

"I can’t really say that they [Zimbabwe] clubs have the financial power to compete with those in South Africa, but a few clubs are now offering something better," he added.

"The most paid player in South Africa right now doesn’t match the money that the most paid player in South Africa was getting from five years ago. The money is now decreasing and probably that is a factor."
