'I respect Onyango, but we have to beat his Uganda'

A Bafana Bafana star insists that, although he holds huge admiration for Denis Onyango, who works as the goalkeeping coach of Uganda, he intends to beat The Cranes on Monday.

Bafana face a crucial match against Uganda in the final group-stage game of the 2024 CAF African Nations Championship.

Victory for either side will guarantee a place in the knockout phase of the tournament.

Prior to the tournament, co-hosts Uganda enlisted Onyango to join their technical staff for the competition.

As such, Onyango took a break from his duties as Mamelodi Sundowns' second-choice goalkeeper to assist his country.

Aware of this, Bafana defender Kwanda Mngonyama has acknowledged the influence of Onyango, who he played with at Sundowns and Bidvest Wits.

According to Ugandan outlet Daily Monitor, Mngonyama said: "I played with Onyango when I was around 18. He is my mentor. The more you respect football, the more it takes you seriously - and Denis is a great example of that.

"We don't talk regularly, but the respect I have for him is enormous. He has won the most championships in South Africa, and that says a lot about him.

"I was honoured to share a dressing room with him. But tomorrow we have to beat Uganda to go through."
