Da Gama after 3 consecutive loses in Botswana: 'It's a process'

Owen Da Gama has endured a difficult start to life in the Botswana Premier League, but the seasoned South African coach insists there’s no reason to panic just yet.

The veteran tactician recently took over at newly formed Black Lions FC after parting ways with Betway Premiership side Magesi FC.

Da Gama's exit from Dikwena Tsa Meetsi was reportedly due to disagreements over a new contract, involving financial issues, despite his efforts in steering the team clear of relegation last season.

The former Orlando Pirates mentor is said to have signed a three-year deal with Lions FC, who acquired the top-flight status of VTM Football Club ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Since the FNB Premiership kicked off on August 15, Da Gama has been in charge for three matches, all of which ended in defeat.

Lions have suffered losses to Botswana heavyweights Township Rollers, Jwaneng Galaxy, and Sua Flamingoes.

Despite the rocky start, the ex-Bafana Bafana coach remains confident that results will improve as he continues to assemble and mould his squad.

"The boys will do well," he told the media in Botswana, as per Pan Africa Football.

"This team is two months old. It didn’t have a pre-season. It is a process that we have to go through.

"We have to strengthen the team, but it won’t come easy because we have to get the right players.

"This team is two months old. We can’t compete; the target is that we must not be relegated. We must build this team. It is a building phase for us."

Black Lions currently sit 14th on the 16-team table with zero points. They are set to face Matebele FC following the FIFA international break in September.
