Al Ahly make 'U-turn' on Koller after Downs draw

Egyptian giants Al Ahly have now reportedly made a 'U-turn' on head coach Marcel Koller after the Red Devils draw against Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League.

In the past number of weeks, it was reported that the Swiss manager could leave the club at the end of the season following a reported fell out with the club's management.

Although Koller's contract with the 12-time African champions is reported to be ending in the near future, rumours have suggested that the coach may be fired, more especially if he fails to win the Champions League title.

This is the case even though the 64-year-old manager has led the team to the semi-finals of this season's Champions League and fighting for a league title as the team sits in second place in the Egyptian Premier League.

However, after the Red Giants' outstanding display in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals against the Sundowns' star-studded team, it appears the club's management may have been swayed to keep the head coach.

Although the match ended in a goalless draw, Ahly put on a fantastic show in a thrilling clash against Miguel Cardoso's Downs at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday.

Ahead of the second leg encounter, Al Ahly president Mahmoud El-Khatib has expressed his support for Koller and his technical staff and complimented the team's performance against Masandawana, according to Egyptian journalist Khaled El-Ghandour.

The report emphasized that El-Khatib refuted speculations about Kohler's possible departure and affirmed that his board members still believe in the coach and that he will keep leading the side beyond the current season.

Ahly will host Sundowns at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday, April 25 for the crucial Champions League semi-final contest, where a winner will face either Pyramids FC or Orlando Pirates.
