The model was previewed at the 2013 Johannesburg International Motor Show and is the second GWM sedan to reach SA following the recent-introduction of the C50.
According to GWM SA COO Warrant Olsen, ‘the C30 slots into a very important market segment. It is aimed at families who need maximum passenger and luggage space and a good balance of power and economy at an affordable price.’
The C30’s cabin is bedecked with a range of modcons including aircon; power steering; electric windows all round; an audio player with radio, CD, MP3 and USB capacities and Bluetooth. As for its practicality, the C30’s 2610mm wheelbase contributes to its luggage capacity of 475 litres, while the rear bench splits 40/60 and can be folded down to accommodate longer items. Concerning its looks, the car is fitted with 15-inch alloy wheels and front and rear fog lamps as standard.
Safe and secure
The sedan rides on a MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear suspension that has apparently been tuned for ride comfort. Occupants’ safety is taken care of with disc brakes all around with ABS and EBD, and dual front airbags.
C30 is powered by GMW’s 1.5-litre VVT-i engine that develops 71kW and 138Nm of torque. The same engine, incidentally, is used in the C10 and C20R hatchbacks, though there it generates 77kW. The sedan, however, is also mated to a five-speed manual transmission. Top speed is 170kph.
Average fuel consumption is noted at 7.3 litres/100km. Service intervals are set at 15 000km.
The GWM C30 1,5 VVT-i costs R179 999 and comes standard with a five-year or 100 000km warranty, a five-year or 45 000km service plan and two years of AA roadside assistance.
