Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Lucky Mohomi will fight to get off the bench

Mohomi completed his second season with Sundowns but spent a big part of the past campaign nursing a knee injury. He only came back in January, meaning he had a lot of catching up to do in terms of fitness.

Competition in central midfield at Sundowns is tough, with Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda forming a solid partnership, while Oupa Manyisa has provided good cover for the pair. Getting into the team will be even harder if Sundowns sign former Orlando Pirates midfielder Andile Jali, who has been linked with the Chloorkop outfit.

Mohomi, a former Free State Stars player, made just two appearances in his second season with Sundowns, after featuring 20 times in all competitions in his first campaign with the side.

“I told myself that the first season was about learning and understanding what happens at Sundowns. In the second season I hoped I would play more, but unfortunately due to injuries I did not manage to do that. On top of that we beefed up the squad, bringing in the likes of Oupa, guys who I have been watching and I admire,” Mohomi tells snl24.com/kickoff.

“The injury set me back. I only started training with the team in January this year, so I had to catch up. The guys were performing well and you can’t just change them. I know my time will come and I will surely have to do the job.”

He continues: “I can’t be always sitting on the bench watching others play. They also have to watch me. As much as I am learning from them, I have to showcase what I have. In the coming season I have to work harder, do extra training, stay healthy and do everything so that I can be able to play.”
