Chippa in midweek announced the sacking of Dan Malesela and hiring of ex-SuperSport United mentor Eric Tinkler as their new head coach barely three games into the season.
The 33-year-old Kobola, who was released by City in the off-season, will soon be unveiled by the Port Elizabeth-based outfit as Tinkler's assistant.
The pair previously worked together when Tinkler guided the Citizens to a third-place finish in the Absa Premiership in the club's first year of existence in 2016/17.
"Eric Tinkler is currently assembling his own technical team," says a source close to United.
"Kobola has since joined Chippa United as an assistant coach."
The Chilli Boys, in 15th place on the table with a point, next face high-flying Matsatsantsa on Wednesday at Lucas Moripe Stadium (19h30).
