MFC Golden Boot winner: Why I chose Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch FC's new signing, Muzomuhle Khanyi, has reacted to being crowned the Motsepe Foundation Championship Top Scorer at the PSL Awards last night and outlines why he chose Stellenbosch as the next step in his football career.

The 26-year-old, who recently joined the Winelands-based club from Hungry Lions, was also honoured as the 2024/2025 season's MFC Players' Player of the Year. The striker scored 18 league goals last season, penning his name into the record books.

"Overall, I scored 19 goals last season, with the 19th goal coming in a Nedbank Cup match," he tells KickOff.

"I'm definitely happy with my achievements; I've been trying to accomplish this for years. However, I couldn't have done it alone, so I'm grateful to my teammates and coaches at Hungry Lions for their support.

"Being the top goalscorer was one of my goals last season, so I had to seize the opportunity with both hands. It was my sixth season in the NFD, and I have previously played for Cape Umoya and Platinum Rovers. I spent three seasons at Hungry Lions.

"Even though I scored many goals, I can't say I expected to be voted Players' Player of the Season. Now that I've joined Stellenbosch, I don't want to put pressure on myself. I'm here to learn and appreciate the opportunity to be coached by one of South Africa's best coaches, Steve Barker," Khanyi added.

"For next season, I will fight for my place in the team while waiting for my opportunity. When it comes, I will grab it with both hands.

"I chose Stellenbosch because their style of play is similar to what I'm used to, especially with regard to counter-attacks. They’re also not afraid to give players a fair chance regardless of their age.

"For the last four years, they've been playing with players aged 22 to 26, which influenced my decision to join them. They compete for every cup, and that’s another reason I chose Stellenbosch."
